Observability bills are a design problem

Most teams do not have a logging cost problem. They have a logging volume problem.

A debug line that fires per request is cheap in development and expensive at scale. Nobody notices until the invoice arrives.

Sampling helps, but only if the sampled events are the ones that matter. Random sampling tends to discard the rare failures you need.

The useful discipline is deciding what a service must be able to answer before it ships, then logging only that.
